Charter Communications is giving customers of its Spectrum Internet service faster download speeds during the busy Thanksgiving holiday.

The perk is part of Spectrum’s “Gig Week” celebration, when eligible Spectrum Internet customers will be able to upgrade their speeds to 1 Gigabits per second (Gbps) on Spectrum’s fiber-based network.

In a press release this week, Charter said the move was intended to help its customers stream holiday videos, take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping deals and stay connected with friends and loved ones through video calls, without having to worry about download or upload speeds.

This is particularly important at a time when most Americans have family and friends over to their homes on Thanksgiving Day — Charter wants Spectrum Internet subscribers to feel confident that their connections won’t be bogged down, even if family and friends join their Wi-Fi network while they’re visiting for dinner or football.

“Thanksgiving means more people, more devices, and a lot more gaming, streaming and shopping,” Sharon Peters, Charter’s Chief Marketing Officer, said in a statement. “Gig Week is our way of saying thank you on one of the busiest online weeks of the year – by giving families the extra bandwidth to keep all their devices running smoothly, whether they’re catching up with family with video calls, streaming their favorite sports or grabbing the best Cyber Monday deals.”

Eligible Spectrum Internet customers are those with the flagship Spectrum Internet plan or those who pay for Spectrum Internet Premier (500 Mbps) or Spectrum Internet Ultra (600 Mbps). Customers need to enroll on Charter’s website before November 24 if they want the Internet speed boost; after December 1, their Internet connection will revert to the maximum speed in their plan.

Those who like the faster Internet can keep it by enrolling in Spectrum Internet Gig on the Spectrum website.
