Chris Rock to headline Netflix’s first live event

Comedian Chris Rock will headline Netflix’s first live-streamed event early next year, the content company says.

Rock will star in a stand-up comedy special that is scheduled to live-stream on the video platform in 2023, according to a spokesperson.

“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” Robbe Praw, Netflix’s vice president of stand-up comedy formats, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honoured that Chris is carrying this torch.”

It will be Rock’s second stand-up special for Netflix. His first, “Chris Rock: Tamoborine,” began streaming on the service three years ago.

Netflix has held several live comedy festivals over the last few years, including their flagship “Netflix is a Joke” event. To date, the streaming service has only offered on-demand video of its stand-up specials and festivals.

The video platform has been exploring ways to offer more live content amid a slowdown in subscriber growth spurred by price increases. The company reversed nearly six months of subscriber losses in mid-October when it reported growth at its international divisions had offset a dip in subscribers in the United States and Canada.
