Chuck Todd will step down as the host and moderator of NBC’s Sunday morning political panel show “Meet the Press,” the network announced on Sunday.

Todd will remain with the broadcast network as its new chief political analyst, where he will appear across NBC News programs and on both CNBC and MSNBC. The new role will also allow Todd to focus on long-term journalism initiatives at NBC.

“When I took over Meet the Press, it was a Sunday show that had a lot of people questioning whether it still could have a place in the modern media space,” Todd said in an announcement broadcast on NBC late Sunday morning. “Well, I think we’ve answered that question and then some.”

Tood became the permanent host of Meet the Press in 2014, six years after former NBC White House correspondent David Gregory assumed the role. Gregory’s appointment came after the untimely death of long-time host Tim Russert, who passed from a heart attack in 2008.

Kristen Welker, NBC’s co-chief White House correspondent, will serve as the new host of Meet the Press when Todd departs. Welker is the first Black host of the show, and the second woman to fill the role, since Meet the Press started in 1947.

Welker began her television career at KRCR (Channel 7), the ABC affiliate in the Chico-Redding market of Northern California, where she worked as a reporter from 2001 to 2003, then as an anchor from 2003 to 2005.

She joined NBC Universal as a reporter and fill-in anchor at WCAU (Channel 10), the network’s owned-and-operated station in Philadelphia, before moving to a general assignment role at NBC News based in Burbank. Welker became a White House correspondent for the network in 2011.
