AT&T says HBO network, HBO Max grew by nearly 3 million subs

AT&T says its premium cable network HBO and domestic streaming service HBO Max added nearly 3 million subscribers in the last quarter, bringing its total number of households receiving HBO programming in the United States to just over 47 million.

The announcement was made as part of the company’s quarterly earnings report on Thursday. Globally, AT&T convinced more than 12 million new customers to hop on the HBO Max bandwagon after launching in several international territories over the last few months.

“Customers love HBO Max, and subscriber growth is exceeding expectations,” Pascal Desroches, the chief financial executive at AT&T’s WarnerMedia division, said on an conference call with investors and the media.

Overall, HBO as a network and HBO Max as a streamer reach a total worldwide audience of over 67.5 million viewers.

AT&T is set to lose some control of its WarnerMedia empire and the HBO brand next year, when the phone provider spins off WarnerMedia into its own company, one that is expected to merge with Discovery Communications.

AT&T’s shareholders will retain a partial stake in the newly-formed Warner Bros.-Discovery, but Discovery’s executives will be in charge of the day-to-day business operations.
