A 52-year-old man has been formally charged with murder in connection with the death of journalist Lyra McKee last year.

The man was one of four people arrested earlier this week in connection with the murder of the 29-year-old journalist. Two of those individuals were released after reporting to local prosecutors, while the other individual was released without charge.

The identity of the man charged with murder has not been released by police. He is expected to appear before a magistrate judge next week. In addition to the murder charge, he faces an additional charge of possessing a firearm.

McKee was fatally shot while covering a riot between police and supporters of the New IRA in her home town of Londonderry last April. Cell phone video captured from the scene revealed the moments she was shot, and police have released additional security footage with the hope it would lead to an arrest.

Earlier this week, police renewed calls for members of the public to come forward with additional photos and videos, saying it was crucial to their investigation.

Disclosure: The author of this story was a personal friend of Lyra McKee.
