A former television news reporter has been arrested after authorities allege he attempted to execute a murder-for-hire scheme.

Thomas Owens was charged on Friday after he alleged met with an undercover operative acting as a hit man. Authorities say Owens wanted his uncle killed for unknown reasons.

Owens, a former U.S. Senate candidate, once worked as a reporter for Tennessee CBS affiliate WJHL-TV.

Owens is being held at a detention center on $100,000 bond.
