A former Sprint executive is joining Charter Communications to service as its senior vice president of mobile products, the company announced on Monday.

David Owens will oversee the development, marketing and maintenance of Charter’s Spectrum Mobile service, a wireless product that is offered to residential and small business customers throughout Charter’s service footprint.

“David’s expertise and experience in the mobile, consumer electronics and software industries will be of tremendous benefit to Charter as we continue to grow and scale our mobile business,” Danny Bowman, the company’s chief mobile officer, said in a statement. “Spectrum Mobile has become the nation’s fastest growing mobile provider by combining superior connectivity with high-value plans and the best devices, and David will help us continue our momentum and our commitment to providing our customers with the best mobile product and services.”

Owens joins Charter from Harman International, where he served as a senior executive in charge of the company’s Digital Transformation Solutions sector. The division, which had around 7,000 workers, provided engineering and related services.

Prior to working for Harman, Owens spent nearly three decades at Sprint Corporation, where his roles included executive positions in charge of product and marketing initiatives, including the wireless industry’s first device lease program. He also maintained key supplier relationships with Apple, Samsung and other companies.

Owens will report to Bowman, and will be tasked with overseeing supplier relationships, developing and executing on Charter’s mobile product strategy, product management and other related tasks.

In late April, Charter revealed its wireless phone customers had a total of 6 million lines. Some customers have more than one line of service through Spectrum Mobile. The company saw a 51.2 percent increase in wireless line additions during a 12-month period that ended March 31, 2023.

Excluding mobile lines, Charter says it serves more than 32.2 million residential and small business customers.
