ABC News audio engineer Trevor Barker died this weekend at the age of 59, the network announced in an online article on Sunday.

Based in South Africa, Barker was dispatched by ABC News to cover stories throughout Africa, Europe and Asia. In 1994, Barker and veteran journalist Peter Jennings were assigned to cover the South African elections that led to the end of apartheid.

Recently, Barker was assigned to cover the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the fall of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and the trial of Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius.

Barker leaves behind a wife and a 12-year-old daughter. The network did not disclose his cause of death.
