DirecTV starts “refer-a-friend” program, offers $100 gift cards

DirecTV is launching a new program that gives subscribers 100 reasons to refer their friends and family to the service.

Starting this month, DirecTV rebooted its referral program that allows existing customers to earn $100 electronic gift cards to popular retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Home Depot when they encourage friends, family members and others to sign up for service.

The program works like this: Existing DirecTV customers must sign up for the referral program by visiting the DirecTV Refer-a-Friend website. The program is free to join, and open to all customers who subscribe to any of DirecTV’s satellite or DirecTV via Internet plans.

Once signed up, DirecTV subscribers will get a unique referral link that they can share with friends, family members and other people through email, text message and social media. The referring customer earns a $100 gift card for every friend and family member they sign up through their unique link — up to $500 in gift cards every 12 months — and the new customer who signs up using the link will also earn a $100 electronic gift card along with introductory pricing on DirecTV satellite and DirecTV via Internet plans.

The electronic gift cards are sent via e-mail once the new customer pays their first bill. New customers have to sign up for qualifying service using the referral link provided by the existing customer, or by calling 1-844-203-9559.

“When you love TV as much as we do, it’s not fair to keep all that thrilling entertainment to ourselves, especially during the giving season,” a DirecTV spokesperson said in a statement earlier this month. “There’s no better time to share the ultimate TV experience with your loved ones with the DirecTV Refer-a-Friend program.”

There is some fine print that DirecTV customers should be aware of. The referral program isn’t available to customers on older DirecTV Stream plans (which is apparently separate from DirecTV via Internet) or legacy customers with U-Verse service. The same is true for DirecTV employees, contractors and DirecTV for Business customers.
