The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) has honored Vizio with a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for the company’s deployment of its refreshed connected TV operating system.

The NATAS Committee honored Vizio for excellence in innovation for “Large-Scale Deployment of its Smart TV Operating System,” which appeared to be connected to the company’s deployment of a refreshed home screen and underlying technology last year.

“Vizio is honored to be recognized by NATAS for our Large Scale OS deployment and as a pioneer in the Smart TV marketplace,” William Wang, Vizio’s CEO, said in a statement on Thursday. “This Emmy Award underscores our consumer-focused vision and world-class engineering team’s execution to deliver exceptional entertainment experiences for Vizio users nationwide.”

The honor was bestowed upon Vizio just a few days after retail giant Walmart announced it was acquiring the electronics brand in a deal valued at over $2 billion. Walmart’s purchase of Vizio is largely connected to its digital advertising business, which is integrated into its smart TV operating system that Vizio developed from the ground up.

Vizio uses a cloud-based architecture that allows it to deploy its own and third party streaming apps directly to Vizio TVs, without any effort from the customer beyond signing in to their WiFi and linking the TiVo to their Vizio account. The platform also provides personalized content and app recommendations to Vizio users, and automatically refreshes its own software and that of third party apps when a new update is deployed.

“Congratulations to the Vizio team for this well-deserved recognition,” Joe Inzerillo, the co-chair of the NATAS Technology Achievement Committee, said on Thursday. “Your work showed excellence in engineering creativity…once again joins a distinguished group of honorees that are carefully chosen by industry experts and peers.”

It is the second year in a row that Vizio has won a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award connected to its streaming platform. In 2023, Vizio won an Emmy Award for its automatic content recognition, or ACR, technology that gives advertisers actionable and transparent information for their digital campaigns.
