
Nexstar Media Group says its broadcast and cable television properties raised nearly $1.5 million for relief efforts associated with Hurricane Helene and disaster preparedness campaigns for Hurricane Milton.
The money will go to a number of organizations that provide disaster relief, including the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the United Way, the broadcaster said on Tuesday.
Nexstar affirmed its portfolio of over 200 owned or operated TV stations participated in collecting money for hurricane preparedness and relief efforts, as did the CW Network, its radio station WGN (720 AM) and its national cable news channel NewsNation. Many of those outlets continue to raise money for hurricane relief efforts.
Additionally, the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation contributed $25,000 to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts, the broadcaster said.
“Since its founding nearly 30 years ago, Nexstar has always been committed to giving back to the communities in which it operates,” Perry Sook, Nexstar’s founder, chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “We take great pride in being able to assist those directing the hurricane recovery efforts in the southeastern region of the United States, and to make it easy for our viewers, listeners, and users to come to the aid of those impacted by Hurricane Helene and possibly Hurricane Milton.”
Hurricane Helene crossed into the western coast of Florida as a Category 4 storm last month, bringing heavy wind and dangerous storm surge that triggered flooding in that state and five others. More than 200 people were killed across the storm’s path, according to government officials.
On Monday, forecasters warned that Hurricane Milton is likely to impact the same area of Florida when it makes landfall either as a Category 4 or Category 5 storm by mid-week.
