Charter Communications has expanded its agreement with Comcast that allows more Xfinity TV subscribers to watch a regional variant of its Spectrum News channel.
Starting this week, Spectrum News 1 in Houston is now available to Xfinity TV subscribers in that region, the companies announced in a press release. The channel features 24-hour news coverage of top stories, community events and local weather forecasts in the Houston area, supplemented with reporting from state and national news partners.
“Expanding Spectrum News 1 to Xfinity TV customers in Houston comes at a time when reliable local journalism is essential for helping communities make sense of the issues that affect their lives,” said Michael Gautreau, the Vice President of Content and News at Spectrum. “By making our coverage available to more viewers, we’re strengthening access to credible reporting and connecting Houstonians with stories, information and perspectives that matter to them.”
Charter has hired Valencia Jones to serve as a multimedia journalist dedicated to covering the Houston area, increasing its commitment to providing local news throughout Texas. Spectrum News also covers Austin, the Dallas-Fort Worth area, El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley — all areas where cable and Internet customers are served by Spectrum.
Spectrum News 1 is available to Xfinity TV subscribers in Houston on Comcast Channel 1127. The national Spectrum News Plus streaming channel is available on Xumo TV devices and the Xumo Play app.
The deal expands the availability of Spectrum News channels on Xfinity TV platforms across the country. Last October, regional Spectrum News channels were announced for Xfinity TV customers in New York, New Jersey, Florida and California. Those channels rolled out to Xfinity TV subscribers two months later.
