Several people were killed on Tuesday after a news helicopter crashed in Los Angeles.
The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Eastern Time), when a news crew aboard the helicopter was covering a collision between multiple vehicles, including a city bus.
In a statement released around 9 p.m. local time, KNBC (Channel 4) confirmed their helicopter, NewsChopper 4, was involved in the crash.
Footage reviewed by The Desk from KNBC’s on-board camera revealed audible warning alerts sounded within the cockpit before the helicopter veered downward. The actual crash was not captured on tape.
A Los Angeles Fire Department official confirmed the crash involved a helicopter, but declined to say definitively whether it was aircraft used by a news organization. The official said one person was killed on the ground, but did not have any information on the conditions of those on board the helicopter.
The last few minutes of KNBC-TV's helicopter flight was captured on live video transmissions sent back to the station. These were the final moments of that flight; conditions of those on board still unknown.
