TEGNA has appointed veteran broadcast executive Tim Thomas to oversee its television stations in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, the company announced on Friday.

Thomas moves to WXIA (Channel 11, NBC) in Atlanta and WMAZ (Channel 13, CBS) in Macon after serving as the President and General Manager of TEGNA’s TV stations in Florida, including WTSP (Channel 10, CBS) in Tampa Bay and its duopoly in Jacksonville, WTLV (Channel 12, NBC) and WJXX (Channel 25, ABC).

Thomas will oversee the stations’ broadcast and digital operations, including programming, audience development and advertising sales. He succeeds Kristie Gonzales, who was one of three executives named to new regional advertising sales positions at TEGNA this week.

“Tim is a visionary leader who blends operational excellence with clear insight into what drives our future growth and success,” Joan Barrett, the Group General Manager for TEGNA’s Northeast and Southeast regions, said in a statement. “We are confident he will bring that same passion, energy, and proven track record to the Atlanta and Macon markets.”

The appointment is a return to Atlanta for Thomas, who previously served as the station manager at WXIA and its independent sister-station WATL (Channel 36). In that position, he oversaw local TV and digital programming while developing new business opportunities.

Before taking his current position in Florida, Thomas served as President and General Manager of TEGNA’s West Texas stations, including KWES (Channel 9, NBC) in Midland-Odessa, KXVA (Channel 15, Fox) in Abilene and KIDY (Channel 6, Fox) in San Angelo. During his tenure, KWES received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in 2022.

“I was at WXIA earlier in my career, and I’m excited to return to continue the station’s success across platforms,” Thomas said in a statement on Friday. “I’m looking forward to working with the teams in Atlanta and Macon to create meaningful content and to develop new opportunities that will increase our impact for viewers and advertisers.”

TEGNA currently operates as an independent, but otherwise wholly-owned, subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group.
