DirecTV will eliminate a restriction on its unlimited cloud DVR feature that capped the number of TV episodes a person could save, The Desk has learned.

When DirecTV first offered the unlimited cloud DVR perk to subscribers of DirecTV Stream and DirecTV via Internet two years ago, The Desk noted the feature wasn’t truly “unlimited,” because streamers could only save the most-recent 30 episodes of a TV series.

Now, that’s going away, a DirecTV spokesperson confirmed by e-mail. Starting Monday, June 17, DirecTV will begin updating its unlimited cloud DVR feature to remove the 30-episode cap, which will finally deliver a cloud DVR feature that is truly unlimited.

The update will roll out in phases, and less than 1 percent of eligible customers will have the restriction removed on Monday, the spokesperson affirmed. The plan is for all customers to have a truly unlimited cloud DVR “in time for the world to turn its focus to one of the planet’s major international sporting competition,” the spokesperson said, alluding to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, without mentioning them by name. The Olympic Games begin next month.

The changes will affect all DirecTV via Internet and DirecTV Stream customers with unlimited cloud DVRs on their accounts. Those who have the 20-hour cloud DVR feature will still be limited to recording no more than 10 episodes of a TV series.

Most new and recent DirecTV Stream and DirecTV via Internet customers have the unlimited cloud DVR feature as part of their plan. Some older DirecTV Stream customers who are grandfathered in to plans that are no longer offered continue to have the limited cloud DVR, though they can remove the restriction by switching to a newer plan.
