San Francisco media columnist Rich Lieberman has been tapped for a new commentary program that will air weekdays on Santa Cruz radio station KSCO-AM.
Lieberman, who is well-known in the San Francisco area for covering Bay Area broadcasters on his blog “415 Media,” currently produces and hosts a show on KSCO’s sister-station KOMY.
Lieberman teased the move to KSCO on Twitter Thursday morning, though he had earlier leaked the news himself when he published a memo on his blog from station owner Michael Zwerling that announced the “installation of a bright new future radio superstar.”
In a conversation by telephone with The Desk, Lieberman said KSCO will give him complete control over his show, which will be “funny, original…what radio used to be like before everyone screwed it up.”
Lieberman’s show, which he described as “a free-form show (built) on an old-fashioned template,” will cover general interest stories alongside topics he feels currently aren’t being covered on the radio.
What Lieberman says his show won’t be is another political show, like so many others that air on AM radio. “I’m going to be anything but,” Lieberman said. “I’m not going to do politics.”
Lieberman’s show will be one of several changes at KSCO. According to Lieberman, the station will relaunch their website and create mobile applications in the near future.
“This station is taking a big step,” Lieberman said. “They’re completely revolutionizing their template.”
The move from KOMY to KSCO gives Lieberman greater reach: KOMY is a community radio station that broadcasts with 1,000 watts of power, while KSCO is a talk radio powerhouse in the Santa Cruz community that broadcasts at 10,000 watts of power. The station can be heard up and down the San Francisco coastline and into parts of mainland Northern California — as far north as Vallejo, as far south as San Luis Obispo.
Lieberman’s show will air weekdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. when it launches the week of October 1.
