Pluto TV to roll out Spanish-language feeds

Free streaming service Pluto TV is readying the launch of nearly two dozen linear channels with Spanish-language content.

The new channels will come with 20,000 hours of Spanish content available through Pluto TV‘s linear channels and on-demand catalog, the service announced on Monday.

The ViacomCBS-owned streaming service says it was the first to offer a dedicated section for Spanish-language content with the launch of a handful of linear channels two years ago. Since then, competing streaming services have added their own Spanish feeds, including Plex and Univision’s Prende TV, as part of a deeper push to reach what has traditionally been an unrepresented segment of the streaming television market.

“We are building on [our] strategy and success by bringing even more programming, channels and genres to meet the increasing demand for streaming throughout the U.S. Hispanic community,” Tom Ryan, the head of streaming at ViacomCBS and a co-founder of Pluto TV, said in a statement. “Pluto TV en español delivers the best of both worlds, a dedicated category of nearly 50 curated channels reflecting the multiethnic, multilingual diversity of the community alongside an additional 200 channels of streaming entertainment in English.”

The addition of the content is a natural fit for Pluto TV: The streamer already operates several Spanish-language variants of the free, ad-supported streaming service in a number of Latin American and European markets aimed at a Spanish-speaking audience.

The expanded section goes live in early May and will be coupled with a vast marketing campaign aimed at bringing more eyeballs to Pluto TV. That marketing campaign will include several perks for streamers, including a “free TV giveaway,” the company said.
