Frontier rolls out first 5 gigabit fiber Internet plan

Frontier Communications says it has launched the country’s first network-wide 5 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) fiber-based Internet plan to customers.

The plan marks the first time an Internet service provider anywhere in the United States has launched a 5 Gbps plan on a fiber-based network, Frontier officials said in a statement on Monday.



The new 5 Gbps plan will cost $155 a month with auto-pay and will include free installation, a wireless router and modem, and uncapped data use. It will also come with Frontier’s premium tech support. Customers who don’t enroll in automatic payments will pay $10 more.

“Frontier’s customer-friendly pricing means the monthly price customers see is the price they pay for their internet service with no additional Wi-Fi or router fees,” a Frontier spokesperson said on Monday. “And with no data caps or overage charges, usage can be as unlimited as the internet itself.”



Frontier says the 5 Gbps plan offers download speeds that are five times faster than cable. It also has lower latency than cable, and offers more than 125 times faster upload speeds, thanks in large part to the fiber-optic backbone that makes the service work.

Frontier is not the first company to offer 5 Gbps Internet connections — Comcast, AT&T, Altice and Google Fiber do as well. But Frontier says it is the first to offer a 5 Gbps throughout its network, while others are still rolling out their fiber-based offerings across their networks in phases.



The company offers high-speed Internet and other services to millions of residents and businesses across 25 states.
