Nexstar Media Group says it will move CW Network programming to three new television stations in Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh and Seattle, starting next month.
On Thursday, Nexstar said it had extended an agreement with Sinclair Broadcast Group that renews affiliation agreements for CW Network programming on television stations in 35 markets, including 10 markets where Sinclair operates a TV station on behalf of another company.
The deal will also see Nexstar move its CW Network programming to WPNT (Channel 22) in Pittsburgh and a digital sub-channel of KOMO-TV (Channel 4) in Seattle. WPNT is currently an independent station that offers programming from Fox’s MyNetwork, while KOMO is a full-time ABC affiliate.
“We appreciate that Sinclair values their partnership with the CW as we remake the network with our significant investment in sports, combined with a smart entertainment programming strategy that will further expand viewership on a local and national level,” Dennis Miller, the president of the CW Network, said in a statement.
Pittsburgh and Seattle were two of eight TV markets where Nexstar was slated to lose a CW Network affiliate after Paramount Global announced it would drop CW programming from its owned-and-operated stations by September 1. WPCW (Channel 19) in Pittsburgh and KSTW (Channel 11) in Seattle will stop airing CW Network programming after Thursday evening.
In Oklahoma City, Sinclair-owned KOCB (Channel 34) will also stop airing CW Network programming on September 1 after Nexstar announced it will move the network affiliation to its own TV station, KAUT (Channel 43).
“KAUT has a legacy of providing their viewers, advertisers, and the community with outstanding service, and we are very pleased to be bringing the CW’s new programming line-up to the station this fall,” Andrew Alford, the president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, said on Thursday.
September 1 will also see the CW Network affiliation move to Nexstar-owned stations in San Francisco, Tampa and Philadelphia, while Hearst-owned KQCA (Channel 58) will broadcast CW Network programming in Sacramento and Gray Television’s WPCH (Channel 17) will offer CW Network shows in Atlanta.
In Detroit, Mission Broadcasting — whose TV stations are entirely operated by Nexstar — is in the process of purchasing WADL (Channel 38), a low-rated, family-owned independent TV station. Nexstar is funding the purchase of WADL, which is expected to start offering CW Network programming next month.
