A Telemundo owned-and-operated station is serving as the ATSC 3.0 “Lighthouse” broadcaster for a handful of major market network affiliates in Tucson.

Starting this week, KHRR (Channel 40) began beaming out NextGen TV simulcasts of its own digital signal and five others, including:

  • KGUN (Channel 9, ABC)
  • KMSB (Channel 11, Fox)
  • KOLD (Channel 13, CBS)
  • KUAT (Channel 6, PS)
  • KVOA (Channel 4, ABC)

“In addition to delivering enhanced audio and video, NextGen TV enables personalized, customized and interactive experiences to be integrated into over-the-air television for the first time, which NBC and Telemundo stations began launching across the nation last month,” Clarence Hau, the SVP of Standards, Policy & Emerging Technology at NBC Universal, said in a statement. “These innovative features, which include the ability to restart a program when joined in progress, are now available on NBC Universal Local’s Telemundo stations in Arizona.”

NextGen TV requires a compatible next-generation digital TV tuner, which is available in some smart TV models offered by Sony, LG, Hisense, Samsung and TCL. There are also standalone NextGen TV tuners for viewers who do not want to upgrade their TV sets, similar to the digital-to-analog tuners that were offered nearly a decade ago.

NextGen TV signals are available in 75 markets across the country.
