DirecTV is launching two channels dedicated to local news coverage of Hurricane Helene ahead of its impending landfall in the gulf states.

On Wednesday, the pay television provider said its DirecTV via Satellite and U-Verse (formerly AT&T U-Verse) customers will be able to monitor the storm through two severe weather channels.

The Severe Weather Channel will offer an aggregated mix of local news reports from stations in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, available on DirecTV Channel 361-2 and U-Verse Channels 227 (SD feed) and 1227 (HD feed).

Additionally, DirecTV will launch Severe Weather Mix, a multi-view experience that allows viewers to track several local news broadcasts at once. The Severe Weather Mix will be available across multiple DirecTV channels, including DirecTV Channel 71-1, 200-1, 307-2 and 361-1.

DirecTV said it is collaborating with local broadcasters like Fox Television Stations, TEGNA, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Gray Media, E. W. Scripps, Nexstar Media Group and Cox Media Group to offer coverage from stations in Tampa, Tallahassee, Macon, Albany, Atlanta and Nashville via the severe weather channels.

Additional channels that are expected to offer coverage of Hurricane Helene include Fox Weather and The Weather Channel, which are available on DirecTV via Internet, DirecTV via Satellite, DirecTV Stream and U-Verse.

As of Wednesday evening, Hurricane Helene was a Category 1 hurricane with sustained wind of 85 miles per hour. It is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 storm Thursday evening. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said this week it is preparing to deal with the aftermath of a multi-state emergency; FEMA has already deployed personnel and equipment to parts of Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Also on Wednesday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it activated the Disaster Information Reporting System, which collects reports about outages afflicting radio and television broadcasters and wireless telecommunications transmitters.
