Pay television broadcaster DirecTV took home a pair of Tech and Engineering Emmy Awards earlier this month.
The Emmy Awards were announced earlier this year, and involved DirecTV’s “Signal Saver” product — which allows satellite customers with connected set-top boxes to switch to a streaming version of a channel when conditions warrant, such as when a severe storm makes a satellite signal less than optimal.
SignalSaver now covers more than 1,200 channels on DirecTV, including hundreds of broadcast stations and national cable networks. The feature is available on Internet-connected Genie receivers, according to a DirecTV support page.
“We were beyond thrilled to be recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with Emmy last night in NYC,” Tony Truppa, DirecTV’s Senior Director of Product Management, wrote on social media last week. “DirecTV Signal Saver was born out of a commitment to enhancing the viewing experience for our satellite customers. We all know the frustration of a disrupted signal due to weather or other interruptions—so our goal was to build a solution that would provide seamless continuity.”
The other award involved DirecTV’s “Pause Ad” feature, which displays commercial and promotional messaging on screen whenever a user pauses an in-progress show or movie while watching a linear TV channel or an on-demand program.
“As was true when we launched the pay TV revolution 30 years ago, innovation is in our DNA at DirecTV,” spokesperson Jon Greer said in an email to The Desk earlier this year. “Both Emmy wins highlight our continued commitment to unlock industry-first entertainment experiences for DirecTV customers.”
The first Tech and Engineering Emmy Award was issued in 1949. The Emmy Awards are overseen by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
