Cumulus Media has renewed its distribution agreement with streaming audio platform TuneIn that will keep hundreds of streaming versions of AM and FM radio stations on the service for a few more years.
The partnership dates back to 2018, when TuneIn restored 441 streaming radio stations owned by Cumulus Media to its platforms, making them instantly available to users of the TuneIn app for phones, tablets and smart TVs. TuneIn is also one of the primary live audio services for smart speakers powered by the Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa.
Today, Cumulus operates more than 400 stations across the country, including popular broadcast outlets like KABC (790 AM) in Los Angeles, KNBR (680 AM) in San Francisco and WLS (890 AM) in Chicago.
“TuneIn naturally aligns with our strategy to expand our digital footprint and extend the reach of our diverse programming to a global audience,” Brian Philips, the Chief Content Officer at TuneIn, said in a statement. “TuneIn offers significant global reach that makes it possible for listeners to easily discover our extensive collection of radio stations and podcasts almost anywhere through the TuneIn platform and 200+ connected devices.”
Rich Stern, the CEO of TuneIn, said the partnership will help extend the reach of Cumulus stations online and further provide the broadcaster with additional monetization opportunities.
“This partnership allows us to bring high-quality content to our listeners while also helping Cumulus monetize its digital audio advertising inventory effectively,” Stern said in a statement. “It’s a win-win for both companies and our audiences.”
In addition to Cumulus stations, TuneIn also offers simulcasts of AM and FM radio stations from iHeart Radio, Alpha Media, Audacy, Bonneville and other major radio broadcasters. It also offers access to public radio stations and simulcasts of cable news and sports programming.
