A television reporter is recovering in the hospital after she was shot during a domestic violence incident this week.
Police were responding to the incident involving WOIO (Channel 19, CBS) reporter Winnie Dortch and another person on Monday when gunshots rang out during the dispute.
Dortch was struck by gunfire and transported from the scene via ambulance. She underwent surgery at a local hospital and was still recovering on Tuesday, according to a relative.
“This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack,” Brian Sinclair, the news director at WOIO, said in a statement. “She was immediately rushed to Metro Health Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries. Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community.”
The person suspect of shooting Dortch was identified by police as 34-year-old Bryant Carter. He died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a law enforcement source said.
Investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the argument and subsequent shooting. No other individuals are believed to be involved.
Dortch joined WOIO in 2022, where she works as a multimedia journalist for the Gray Media-owned station. She previously worked for stations in Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska, and started her career as a morning news intern at Nexstar-owned WGN (Channel 9) in Chicago, and had recently accepted a job offer at that station.
