Software developer Plex has lifted the curtain on a new user interface that will be rolling out to mobile devices as part of a preview over the next few weeks, with a full launch across all Plex apps early next year.

The preview comes after Plex decided to completely rebuild its streaming video apps from the ground up, company officials said in a blog post this week.

“Our mission is to create a global community where everyone can discover, experience, and share all of the entertainment that matters to them,” a Plex spokesperson said. “This rebuilt interface is just another way we’re staying true to this mission.”

The new user interface includes improvements to how streamers navigate the Plex app, which supports personal libraries and offers hundreds of free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels.

“We’ve brought our core features to the forefront, saying goodbye to the days of hidden hamburger menus and making it easier to explore with one hand on your phone,” Plex said.

Personal media is now accessible through a dedicated tab, as is the Plex watch list feature. Plex is rolling out improved artwork for shows and movies, and will include title-specific graphics that will “add polish to each page.”

Power users will be able to reorganize their personal media and customize different menus, Plex said. In an interview with The Streaming Wars, executives said Plex has around 26 million users who have added 150 million items to their personal libraries.

The new user interface is launching in public beta so that Plex can get more information about how its customers interact with the application and to fix any problems ahead of a broader rollout.

“Plex runs on a vast range of devices and networks — more than most platforms — so we need your help to ensure everything works as smoothly as possible,” the company told its users. “Your feedback is essential to fine-tuning and optimizing the experience for all use cases. By running this Preview alongside the current app, you can have a worry-free test drive, providing your insights without disrupting your current Plex experience.”

Plex users who are interested in trying out the new mobile app experience can learn how to install the preview on their phones or tablets by visiting the Plex forums.
