The Board of Directors at local television broadcaster Gray Television approved a measure this week to officially change the name of the company to Gray Media.
The name change is intended to better reflect Gray Media’s position as a well-diversified communications business, one that includes traditional broadcast television and emerging digital platforms.
The company has issued press releases and public statements as “Gray Media” for some time, and executives have internally referred to the business under that name for the past few months. The action by the company’s board on Monday allows Gray Media to legally change its name and effectuate business deals as Gray Media moving forward.
“Over the past decade, Gray has grown into new geographic and business markets, while also expanding content and product offerings for our loyal viewers,” Hilton Howell, the Chairman of the Board and co-CEO at Gray Media, said in a statement. “Our reach has diversified beyond local media, and we’re investing time and resources into new business models and technologies — more now than at any other time in the company’s 127-year history.”
“With this growth and change, formally updating the company’s name to Gray Media, Inc. reflects our ongoing transformation and continued desire to lead the way in traditional and new media, alongside our leading broadcast stations,” Hilton concluded.
The name change to Gray Media won’t immediately affect the company’s stock market symbol, which will continue to be “GTN” on the New York Stock Exchange. It also will not affect Gray Media’s CUISP number or the rights of security holders, a spokesperson said.
Gray Media is based in Atlanta. The company operates more than 180 local television stations in over 110 regional markets, and also operates the streaming platform Zeam.
