
A group of broadcast television executives will discuss the collaborative initiative EdgeBeam Wireless at the National Association of Broadcasters’ (NAB) trade show next week.
The executives include Sinclair, Inc. CEO Chris Ripley; Gray Media CEO Pat LaPlatney; Nexstar Chief Operating Officer Michael Biard and E. W. Scripps Company CEO Adam Symson, who will discuss how the country’s leading independent local TV broadcasters will utilize datacasting advancements brought by ATSC 3.0 — also known as NextGen TV — to superserve data-dependent industries and support their overall broadcast businesses. EdgeBeam Wireless was first announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year.
“EdgeBeam will be able to deliver data across the country to any civilian or military device with an ATSC 3.0 receiver, such as cars and trucks, drones, marine vessels, phones, tablets, and television sets,” the companies participating in the EdgeBeam Wireless joint venture said in January. “This partnership creates a spectrum footprint that no individual broadcaster could achieve on its own, unlocking the potential of ATSC 3.0 to offer nationwide coverage for data delivery to billions of potential devices on market-disrupting terms.”
The companies say they anticipate partnering with other broadcasters “for additional capacity to offer truly nationwide services.”

Chris Ripley, the President and CEO of Sinclair, called the formation of EdgeBeam Wireless “a groundbreaking development for the broadcasting industry.”
