A service disruption left thousands of Comcast customers across the country unable to access their phone, Internet or television service on Monday.
The outage started around 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) when Comcast’s Xfinity TV, Xfinity Internet and Xfinity Voice services suddenly went offline.
The issue affected both residential and enterprise customers in key markets like San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Denver, Detroit, Seattle and Miami, according to reports reviewed by The Desk.
It wasn’t immediately clear how widespread the issue was, as Comcast’s official outage map was initially unavailable online Monday afternoon. Xfinity Mobile, while runs on Verizon’s 4G LTE and 5G wireless networks, was not affected, though customers were unable to pay their bills or make service changes during the outage, because those platforms operate on Comcast’s own system.
By 6 p.m. Eastern Time (3 p.m. Pacific Time), all Comcast services were restored, a spokesperson told The Desk by e-mail.
“Our customers are now up and running after a brief interruption to their service due to a system update,” the spokesperson said. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”
It is the second disruption to affect a large amount of Comcast customers over the past year. Last September, a car crash knocked out Comcast’s land-based broadband and TV service in large parts of Northern California, affecting subscribers in areas like Sacramento, Elk Grove, Clovis, Fresno, Lodi, Los Banos, Madera and Mendota.
