TEGNA has promoted Scott Gill to Vice President of Technology and Operations, expanding his leadership responsibilities across the broadcaster’s engineering, technology and sports operations as the company continues operating independently under Nexstar Media Group’s ownership.
In his new role, Gill will oversee engineering, technology and sports operations across TEGNA’s 64 local television stations, with responsibility for strengthening station performance, modernizing infrastructure and supporting the delivery of local journalism across broadcast, streaming, mobile and digital platforms.
Gill succeeds after serving as Head of Technology and Sports Operations, where he played a central role in advancing the company’s digital transformation efforts. During his tenure, he led technology and operational strategy across TEGNA’s station portfolio while supporting the company’s live sports productions, including coverage of NBA, WNBA, NHL and Major League Baseball events, as well as nationally syndicated programming.
He also managed TEGNA’s drone and helicopter operations, helping expand local stations’ electronic newsgathering capabilities while overseeing aviation safety and operational standards.
“Scott brings a unique combination of operational expertise, technical leadership and innovation to this position,” Kurt Rao, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology and Digital Products Officer, said in a statement. “He’s played a critical role in advancing our stations’ technology, and he has the expertise we need to strengthen our operations as we continue to shape the future of local media.”
Gill joined TEGNA in 2012 after spending 10 years in field operations at Fox News Media, where he supported major news coverage and live event productions. His career also includes production work with Harpo Productions on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” along with positions at several television stations and production facilities. Outside broadcasting, Gill is a former emergency medical technician and licensed pilot.
“I’m excited to take on this new role leading tech and operations teams across TEGNA,” Gill said in a statement on Monday. “Local journalism depends on strong technology. I look forward to working with our station leaders to strengthen the tools our newsrooms rely on to serve our communities.”
The appointment comes as TEGNA continues to operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group while an antitrust lawsuit over its March acquisition of the broadcaster plays out in Northern California. A preliminary injunction issued in the case requires Nexstar to maintain its distance from TEGNA, with certain exceptions.
