Nielsen to formalize audience measurement with wearable tech

Nielsen is moving forward with changes to its Big Data + Panel methodology after trialing a new ratings system that incorporated co-viewing signals from wearable technology during the Super Bowl earlier this year.

The updates will be incorporated August 31, ahead of the new broadcast television season. Nielsen said the changes are intended to make Big Data + Panel measurement more accurate, though the company cautioned that the enhancements do not guarantee higher ratings.

Nielsen said it has been working with clients and other stakeholders to prepare the market for the changes, including sharing preview data to help customers assess potential effects. The company also said the timing and substance of the updates were negotiated with oversight from the Media Ratings Council.

On the co-viewing side, Nielsen said panelists wearing proprietary measurement devices on the wrist will contribute to that metric within Big Data + Panel, which will give Nielsen clients a better understanding of out-of-home viewing and improve its ratings data accordingly.

Nielsen said the passive approach reduces reliance on formal login behavior and should provide a more accurate view of how many people are watching a given program.

“We are relentless in our pursuit of delivering the most accurate measurement possible for our media and advertising clients,” Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao said in a statement. “We’ve spent months working hand in hand with them and industry experts to make Big Data + Panel even more accurate.

Nielsen is also updating its use of ARF DASH universe estimates: While the company adopted the Advertising Research Foundation’s DASH universe estimates into currency earlier this year, the new latency-adjusted approach is intended to address timing delays in survey data. Nielsen said prior DASH universe estimates were based on 2024 survey data, while the new adjustment reflects more recent consumer behavior trends.

The use of ARF DASH data grabbed attention earlier this year when Nielsen attempted to incorporate some of that information in its monthly “The Gauge” report. After pushback from some Nielsen clients who received a first-look at its report for the February measurement month, Nielsen delayed the issuance of the report for several more weeks while it refined the reported data.

At the time, Nielsen said the incorporation of ARF DATA into The Gauge was intended to offer similar data compared to what its television and advertising clients were already receiving months earlier. The measurement firm cautioned that The Gauge was merely intended to provide a public-facing snapshot of TV consumption in any given month, and not to be used as a currency, but in the announcement on Wednesday about its refinements, Nielsen pointed to The Gauge as one of several reports that made the company “the truth for streaming measurement.”

Another change affects Nielsen’s Household Demographic Assignment Model, a machine-learning tool used to estimate the demographic makeup of households from big data providers. Nielsen said the update is designed to make the data more representative and avoid artificially skewing toward older residents.

The company is also revising its integrated weighting process to combine its data from panels and first party sources more effectively, with the goal of producing more consistent and reliable viewing estimates: For Hispanic measurement, Nielsen said it will combine data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey with the National Hispanic Enumeration Survey to improve Spanish-language universe estimates and provide a more representative picture of Spanish-speaking households.

Other updates focus on automated content recognition, or ACR, technology: Nielsen said an ACR monitored tuning adjustment will improve how the company accounts for differences between the sources measured by ACR providers and those measured in Nielsen’s panel. A separate “Provider B Householding” change will improve how Nielsen groups big data devices into individual households for one of its ACR data providers.
