Satellite and streaming radio broadcaster SiriusXM has promoted Sean Gibbons to the new role of Chief Product and Technology Officer, expanding and extending his oversight to other parts of the company, including Pandora.
Gibbons reports to SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz and will join the company’s Executive Leadership Team. His responsibilities include product strategy and development, technology platforms and engineering, automotive and streaming distribution partnerships and advertising technology.
“Sean has helped shape SiriusXM through some of our most important product and technology transformations, including the development and successful rollout of SiriusXM with 360L,” Witz said in a statement on Tuesday.
Gibbons’ priorities will include advancing SiriusXM 360L and future in-car experiences, shaping the company’s technology roadmap across satellite, broadcast and streaming platforms and applying artificial intelligence to personalization, discovery and customer service.
He will also focus on creating more connected and interactive experiences across SiriusXM’s vehicle and streaming products, the company said in a statement
Gibbons joined SiriusXM predecessor Sirius Satellite Radio in 2000 — before the company’s first satellite launch — and has held leadership roles spanning product management, engineering, automotive, streaming, content technology and strategic partnerships. (Sirius merged with XM Satellite Radio in 2008.)
During his tenure, he established SiriusXM’s first formal Product Management organization and later founded and led its first Streaming organization, expanding the service across mobile, web and connected-home platforms.
Most recently, Gibbons led SiriusXM’s Automotive organization, overseeing product, user experience, engineering and automaker partnerships tied to the company’s in-vehicle services.
His promotion comes at a time when SiriusXM is increasingly looking at different strategies to expand beyond its traditional satellite radio service, which continues to be the largest single driver of revenue at the company.
Over the years, SiriusXM has pushed its way into connected audio — largely through its acquisition of Pandora, Stitcher and other companies — and launched new business units focused on digital advertising, including one that now handles domestic ad sales for YouTube’s audio initiatives.
