Sports streaming service DAZN recorded a significant increase in viewership across Germany during September, with total viewing time more than tripling as the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League soccer seasons got underway.

German audience measurement organization AGF Videoforschung reported that DAZN generated approximately 14.6 million viewing hours during September, an increase of 215 percent compared to August. The service also experienced substantial growth in audience reach, attracting approximately 3.3 million viewers ages three and older during the month, an increase of 76 percent.

The figures placed DAZN ahead of competing services Sky and Wow in monthly reach. Sky attracted approximately 2 million viewers, while Wow, its sister streaming platform, reached 2.1 million. DAZN averaged approximately 348,000 daily users during September, representing a 130 percent increase compared to the prior month.

The growth coincided with the beginning of the German professional soccer season and the return of UEFA Champions League competition, two major drivers of sports streaming consumption in the country.

The data was released October 8 by AGF Videoforschung, which measures television and streaming audiences for German broadcasters and advertisers. The organization began publishing monthly streaming platform measurements earlier this year, providing comparative figures for total viewing hours and audience reach.

Despite DAZN’s growth, Amazon Prime Video remained Germany’s most-watched measured streaming platform by total viewing time, generating 125.8 million hours during September, an increase of 1.3 percent from August. Among viewers ages 14 to 49, a demographic frequently targeted by advertisers, Prime Video’s viewing hours increased 13.7 percent.

ARD Mediathek, the streaming platform operated by Germany’s public broadcaster ARD, ranked second in overall viewing time with 106.2 million hours, an increase of 16.1 percent. ARD Mediathek led all measured streaming services in monthly audience reach, attracting approximately 26.2 million viewers. ZDF’s streaming platform followed with 19.4 million viewers, a decline of 5.2 percent, while Amazon Prime Video reached approximately 18.9 million.

Commercial streaming services RTL Plus and Joyn each attracted approximately 11 million viewers during September. RTL Plus generated 64.6 million viewing hours, an increase of 10.9 percent compared to August.

Other platforms experienced declines: Wow reported a 5.8 percent decrease in viewing time, while Sky’s platform recorded an 11.8 percent increase. Arte’s viewing time declined 12.8 percent, while children’s programming service KiKa experienced a 12 percent decrease.
