TEGNA has appointed Brian Gregory as President and General Manager of two of its North Carolina television stations, NBC affiliate WCNC (Channel 36) in Charlotte and CBS affiliate WFMY (Channel 2) in Greensboro, the company announced Wednesday.

Gregory will oversee operations at both stations, including their financial performance, news programming, advertising sales, digital and streaming operations and community engagement efforts.

He succeeds Joan Barrett, who was recently promoted to Group General Manager overseeing TEGNA’s local TV stations in the Northeast and Southeast regions.

The appointment is part of a broader series of management changes at TEGNA under Chief Executive Officer Patrick Paolini, who has overseen the creation or filling of more than a dozen leadership positions at the corporate and station levels.

“As we strengthen leadership across TEGNA, we’re looking for people who develop talent and deliver results. Brian does both,” Barrett said in a statement. “WCNC and WFMY are in good hands, and I’m looking forward to what these teams accomplish under Brian’s direction.”

Gregory moves into the position after serving in a leadership role at TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate WVEC (Channel 13) in Norfolk, Virginia.

During his tenure at WVEC, Gregory helped expand the station’s digital and streaming operations, including the introduction of more than 35 hours of exclusive local programming each week.

The expansion was part of an effort to reach viewers through streaming platforms and other digital services in addition to the station’s traditional broadcast television programming: Gregory has nearly 30 years of experience in local television broadcasting, including newsroom management and station leadership positions in several major markets.

Before joining WVEC, he spent six years as News Director at Fox affiliate KDVR (Channel 31) and CW affiliate KWGN (Channel 2) in Denver. His earlier experience includes leadership positions at CBS affiliate KWCH (Channel 12) in Wichita, CBS-owned KOVR (Channel 13) in Sacramento and CBS affiliate WVLT (Channel 8) in Knoxville.
