Disney to shut down Fox channels in Asia

The Walt Disney Company will shut down several Fox-branded television channels in Asia as part of a broader push toward international variants of its Disney Plus streaming service.

More than a dozen channels will stop broadcasting later this year as part of the move, including pan-Asia versions of Fox and FX along with specialty channels Fox Crime, Fox Family Movies, Fox Action Movies, Fox Life. Localized versions of the Disney Channel and Disney Junior are also being closed.

The channels were previously owned by 21st Century Fox and were acquired by Disney when it purchased other foreign and domestic assets in 2019.

Disney has already rolled out versions of its Disney Plus streaming service in Asian countries affected by the move and will move content from the displaced Fox and Disney channels over to the streamer.

After the closures, Disney will continue to operate a small handful of pay television channels on satellite in southeast Asia, including National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild and the Star Chinese Channel.
