Streamer VUit adds Cox Media Group stations

Local news streaming service VUit has added a handful of new stations operated by the Cox Media Group to its lineup.

The addition of the channels helps bring the total number of local television markets covered to more than 150, the website Fierce Video reported on Tuesday.

VUit, a relative newcomer in the ad-supported streaming video space, launched one year ago with support from Gray Television, Meredith Corporation (which is in the process of being acquired by Gray Television) and a handful of smaller television owners.

The deal with Cox Media Group brings local news feeds from a handful of major markets to streaming television viewers, with supported stations including Seattle CBS affiliate KIRO-TV (Channel 7), Boston Fox affiliate WFXT (Channel 25) and Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB-TV (Channel 2).

In a statement released this week, an executive in charge of VUit said the additional channels would help feed an insatiable appetite for local news beyond their home markets.

“Cox is the perfect partner to amplify VUit’s content offerings, and we’re excited to be able to bring the high-quality content of their local stations to viewers nationwide,” Jack Perry, the chief executive of Syncbac, the parent company VUit, said.

The company’s plans with Cox Media extend beyond local news: VUit says it will work with the broadcaster to launch original content that will stream on VUit and elsewhere.
