Lionsgate will debut some movies, shows on Tubi

Fox Corporation’s free, ad-supported streaming service Tubi will distribute a handful of Lionsgate-produced films and TV shows under a new deal announced by both companies this week.

The move will see Lionsgate offer movies like “Shattered,” “Pursuit” and more than two dozen other feature-length films on Tubi as well a library of more than 200 other titles.

“We’re thrilled to be expanding our longstanding partnership with Lionsgate,” Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s chief content executive, said in a statement on Tuesday. “Bringing together an exclusive free offering of 30 upcoming releases, as well as beloved movies and series from Lionsgate’s world-class content library, will deliver even more value to our viewers.”

The deal is separate from one Lionsgate has with its own premium multiplex movie network Starz, which distributes some feature films immediately after their theatrical run. Last month, reports indicated Lionsgate was in the preliminary stages of spinning off Starz into a separate company.

“This agreement reflects our ability to have multiple bespoke content licensing deals with an expanding array of buyers in every part of the content ecosystem,” Ryan Lowerre, the executive in charge of Lionsgate’s domestic television distribution arm, said in a statement.

Tubi operates as a quasi-autonomous unit within Fox Corporation. Last month, the service said it had more than 51 million active users that streamed a collective 3.6 billion hours of content last year, which it said was a year-over-year increase of about 40 percent in total viewing time.

In addition to movies and television shows, Tubi offers a handful of linear news, weather and sports channels, including LiveNOW from Fox, ABC News Live, Newsy, Bloomberg Quicktake, Fox Weather, WeatherNation and live feeds from TEGNA, Hearst Television and Fox-owned broadcast stations.
