Cinemax Go streaming service to close later this month

Warner Bros Discovery will stop operating its Cinemax Go streaming service at the end of the month, according to a notice sent to subscribers around the holiday weekend.

Starting July 31, Cinemax subscribers will only be able to access movies and shows offered through the multiplex movie network by tuning in to the Cinemax linear channels on cable or satellite, or by accessing the network’s video on-demand library through their pay TV provider.

The Cinemax Go app was removed from app stores for phones, tablets and smart TV sets two years ago, though a browser-based version of the service continued to operate. Cinemax Go is an outlier among premium movie networks, in that it typically requires a cable or satellite subscription to use (only the Apple TV app offers standalone streaming access to Cinemax without cable or satellite). Cinemax’s sister network HBO and competitors Showtime, Starz and Epix all offer standalone streaming subscriptions that do not require cable or satellite service.

Many Cinemax shows and movies, including the original series “Warrior” and “The Knick,” are available as part of HBO Max, which starts at $10 a month with advertisements.

Cinemax will continue to be offered to traditional cable and satellite subscribers at a cost of around $11 a month. The service is also available as an add-on for customers of the streaming pay TV service YouTube TV.
