Amazon officially retires Epix website, apps after MGM Plus launch

After supporting the Epix website and apps for several months, Amazon this week officially retired the Epix brand name following the movie channel and streaming service’s rebranding to MGM Plus this year.

The rebranding occurred in January as Amazon moved forward with a new strategy that saw placed greater emphasis on streaming while still operating Epix (now MGM Plus) as an ancillary multiplex movie network.

The Epix brand was acquired by Amazon as part of the tech company’s broader $8.45 billion purchase of MGM Studios in 2021. Last September, Amazon announced the four Epix-branded cable movie networks and the Epix streaming service would take on the MGM name to better reflect its marriage with the movie studio and the content it offers. The transition also saw the closure of the cable channel MGM HD, which was pulled from cable, satellite and some streaming services last October.

“MGM is one of the most-iconic and beloved brands from the golden age of entertainment,” Michael Wright, the executive in charge of MGM Plus, said in a statement last year. “This rebrand is a promise to existing and new viewers that MGM Plus is the place to find television that reflects and celebrates the legacy of the iconic MGM brand — cinematic programming with sophisticated storytelling that entertains, delights, surprises and transports. MGM is television for movie lovers.”

The name change occurred earlier this year, but the Epix website and streaming apps were supported for several months as the company worked to educate consumers on the transition from one brand name to another. Cable, satellite and streaming subscribers who had Epix as part of their package could still download the Epix app and log into the service with their pay TV credentials even after the rebranding was complete.

Now, those cable, satellite and streaming customers will need to download the MGM Plus app, if they haven’t done so already. The same movies and TV shows that pay TV customers and streamers found on Epix will also be available on the MGM Plus channels and within the MGM Plus app.

Streamers who were still watching content through Epix received an email this week informing them of the full closure of Epix, with information on how to watch content through MGM Plus. All watchlists that were previously created and saved on the Epix app automatically moved over to MGM Plus, and streamers don’t have to create a new set of credentials to access the service.
