Roku debuts home security system, offers smart home updates

Roku is expanding its smart home ecosystem with a new security product that pairs with its cameras and other devices.

The Roku Home Monitoring System SE will be sold by Walmart and through the Roku website for $100. The five-piece kit includes a home hub with a built-in siren, two entry sensors, a motion sensor and an easy-to-use keypad.

As is the case with most of Roku’s smart home items, the Roku Home Monitoring System SE is a private-label version of a home security kit made by Wyze, which includes the exact same hardware kit and also costs $100.

Like the Wyze version, the Roku Home Monitoring System SE will allow Roku users to monitor their home security system on their own, without any fees. Customers can also pay $10 a month or $100 a year for professional home monitoring powered by Noonlight, which includes U.S.-based support agents, emergency assistance and qualifies most homeowner’s insurance policyholders for a discount (varies by policy). Roku customers get their first year of professional monitoring at a 50 percent discount when they purchase the Roku Home Monitoring System SE.

The Roku Home Monitoring System SE pairs with Roku’s line of streaming TV devices, which allows users to arm or disarm their home monitoring system right from their TV sets and view all smart cameras connected to the system.

In addition to the Roku Home Monitoring System SE launch, Roku says it is rolling out an updated version of the Roku Smart Light Strip Plus SE, as well as a new solar panel device that pairs with its Roku Outdoor Camera SE.
