The E. W. Scripps Company’s free streaming news channel Scripps News received three National Headliner Awards this week.
The awards are bestowed upon news organizations that commit outstanding acts of journalism during the year, including reporters, editors, graphic artists and photographers who work for recognized television broadcasters, radio stations and news syndication services.
Scripps News was honored with awards in the following categories:
Best Radio Networks and Syndicators: Documentary or Public Affairs for “Inside the Global Fight for White Power,” an investigation conducted in partnership with Reveal (Center for Investigative Reporting) that explored how the Russian Imperial Movement was linked to a vast terrorism network in Europe. (First place award)
Narrative Podcast & Best in Show for “Unfinished: Ernie’s Secret,” a 10-episode podcast produced in partnership with SiriusXM’s Stitcher that explored the life of acclaimed African-American civil rights photographer Ernest C. Withers. As a photographer, Withers documented the Emmett Till murder trial; the integration of buses in Montgomery, Alabama and other key events. The podcast revealed that Withers was also an FBI informant who helped the agency keep tabs on the civil rights movement, which was discovered after his death in 2007. (First place award)
Broadcast Television Networks, Cable Networks & Syndicators: Documentary or Series of Reporters on the Same Subject for the Scripps News investigation “The Model City: How Police Reform Failed in Breonna Taylor’s Hometown,” which was conducted in partnership with the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting. The organizations used thousands of pages of records and dozens of interviews with current and former law enforcement officials to show how the Louisville Police Department went from being a leading example of a reformed agency to another element in the renewed movement for civil rights.
