Philo adds new streaming channels from Sony, Tastemade

Budget-conscious streaming TV service Philo has added more than a half-dozen new channels of content from Sony Pictures Television and the lifestyle media brand Tastemade.

The new offerings introduced this week include several Cinevault-branded movie streams, two Tastemade streams and Game Show Central, and adds to Philo’s growing roster of linear channels plucked from the world of free, ad-supported streaming channels.

The seven new channels that debuted on Philo this week are:

  • Cinevault: 80s
  • Cinevault: Classics
  • Cinevault: Murder & Mayhem
  • Cinevault: Westerns
  • Game Show Central
  • Tastemade Home
  • Tastemade Travel

While the channels are being billed by Philo as “free, ad-supported TV,” they are only available within the Philo app with a subscription to the service’s premium TV offering. That subscription costs $25 a month (after a seven-day free trial) and includes dozens of cable channels like Animal Planet, AMC, A&E, BBC America, BET, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, History Channel, HGTV, Nickelodeon, Story Television, TLC and TV Land.

The inclusion of the “free” channels adds to a growing list of similar content streams that Philo has added into its service, which allows it to offer an expanded library of TV shows and movies without having to raise the price on its customers.

Other channels that have recently launched on Philo under the same strategy include Chicken Soup for the Soul TV, the Bob Ross Channel, Fail Army, Screambox TV and USA Today.

In addition to its core cable channels and ad-supported content streams, Philo also offers an add-on package called “Movies & More,” as well as subscriptions to MGM Plus and Starz. Those programming plans are available for separate fees.

Philo is widely supported on most streaming TV platforms, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV (Google TV) and newer-model Samsung smart TVs. Philo apps for smartphones and tablets are also available, and Philo’s live channels and on-demand content can also be streamed on computers and laptops through the Philo website.
