Paramount Global is pulling the plug on the standalone streaming version of its multiplex movie network Showtime.
The Showtime app will stop functioning on April 30, several months after Paramount integrated Showtime’s film and television content into the premium tier of Paramount Plus. The two flagship Showtime linear channels — Showtime East and Showtime West — were also rebranded to Paramount Plus with Showtime in January.
“Now that subscribers can access their favorite Showtime programs on Paramount Plus by subscribing to the Paramount Plus with Showtime plan, the Showtime streaming service will shut down on April 30, 2024,” a Paramount spokesperson said in a note to customers published earlier this month.
Paramount has allowed current monthly and annual Showtime subscribers to continue paying for an accessing the service for weeks after Showtime content was integrated into Paramount Plus. Those subscribers will continue to have access to the standalone Showtime app through the end of the month, Paramount said.
It was not clear if annual Showtime subscribers would be moved to Paramount Plus, or if they will receive a refund for the remaining time on their account after April 30.
The standalone version of Showtime first debuted in January 2015, offering premium shows like “Shameless,” “Weeds,” “Dexter,” “Homeland” and “Ray Donovan” available to stream without a traditional cable or satellite subscription.
The Showtime app was also unique at the time of its launch for offering streaming versions of Showtime East and Showtime West, with some third party services like Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video Channels offering streaming versions of other Showtime channels like Showtime 2 and Showtime Family Zone as well.
Paramount Plus with Showtime also offers linear streams of Showtime’s East Coast and West Coast feeds, along with the entire Showtime content library. Paramount Plus with Showtime costs $12 per month or $120 per year; new customers can get a free trial when they sign up by clicking or tapping here.
In addition to Showtime content, Paramount Plus with Showtime offers streaming access to a subscriber’s local CBS station or affiliate and on-demand access to films and television shows from CBS, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, TV Land, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., CBS Sports and Paramount Pictures.
