DirecTV is evolving the user interface on its Gemini set-top boxes by adding a new carousel-style menu that collates popular third-party streaming apps.
Earlier this week, DirecTV began pushing out an update to some Gemini set-top boxes and Gemini Air dongles that collates streaming apps and related content from a single screen.
The “My Apps” carousel aggregates the most-watched, trending on-demand and live content from popular third-party apps like Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV, Peacock and others, and users can quickly launch apps like Netflix, YouTube and Max from a central place.
DirecTV will showcase the most-used apps by default, but customers can rearrange them based on their own personal preferences, a spokesperson said. The customization makes the My Apps menu ideal for sports fans and binge-watchers alike.
The company said DirecTV subscribers with Gemini set-top boxes and Gemini Air devices can expect to see the new My Apps carousel in the coming weeks, if they do not already have the feature by now.
The feature is the latest to land on Gemini-branded devices. Earlier this week, the company pushed out a new app that offered robust coverage of the 2024 election, with real-time results powered by the Associated Press and a multiview option that allowed customers to watch coverage from Fox News, CNN, Newsmax and MSNBC from a single screen.
In July, DirecTV said its satellite customers with connected set-top boxes would get a new user interface that better presents the linear and on-demand content available in their subscription. The new interface includes a dedicated Sports menu, which is also available on the electronic program guide of Gemini boxes and dongles.
DirecTV offers its Gemini and Gemini Air devices to customers of DirecTV via Internet — which offers similar programming to its satellite-based service — and DirecTV Stream.
