Chris Stirewalt, the political editor for Nexstar Media Group’s cable news channel NewsNation and the host of its Sunday morning political affairs program, has been named political editor of the broadcaster’s digital publication The Hill.
In his new role, Stirewalt will write a weekly column for The Hill and a regular political note that offers his insight on policy matters related to Washington. He will also conduct leading panel discussions with key political leaders in Washington and beyond, the network said.
“We are thrilled Chris will be joining The Hill,” said Cherie Grzech, the President of News & Politics for The Hill and NewsNation. “His expansive knowledge of Washington, and signature wit and delivery, will be an enormous asset to the newsroom.”
Stirewalt began covering politics at the Charleston Daily mail in 1998; he moved to Washington in 2007 where he was the political editor for the Washington Examiner. He spent 10 years at Fox News Media and its Fox News Channel as political editor between July 2010 and January 2011 before becoming a contributing editor to The Dispatch. He was hired by NewsNation to help guide its political coverage nearly three years ago.
“I started work as a political columnist covering the 2004 presidential election,” Stirewalt said on Monday. “A great deal is different in both politics and the news business now. What hasn’t changed is that a great many Americans still are looking for straightforward, fair-minded analysis, but too often find partisanship masquerading as punditry. I am thrilled to be part of the team at The Hill, where journalists are working hard every day to provide tough, fair, incisive coverage that opens Washington up to the citizens it is supposed to be serving.”
According to data from Comscore, The Hill’s website regularly outpaces CNN Politics, Politico and Axios among online political publications. The Hill currently reaches more than 34 million Americans, an increase of nearly 14 percent compared to November 2023.
Stirewalt will continue hosting “The Hill Sunday,” a political affairs program launched around this time last year. The show airs on Nexstar-owned CW Network stations and other outlets, and repeats on The Hill TV and NewsNation.
