After testing its new mobile app experience with some users for a few weeks, media company Plex has brought its refreshed app experience to phones and other portable devices.
On Monday, the revamped Plex app for phones was submitted to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store; a spokesperson said the new app should be available for phones and other mobile devices within the next few days.
Originally launched as a software “fork” of what ultimately became Kodi, Plex has worked to rebuild its app experience from the ground up over the last few months as the company leans further into supporting users who build and deploy their own media server along with streamers who want free, ad-supported linear and on-demand content from a single app.
The new Plex mobile app is free to use, whereas the prior app experience required a Plex Pass or a one-time mobile unlock charge. Similarly, the classic and new Plex server experiences are free to use, though some more-advanced features like remote streaming will be relegated to the Plex Pass, which is still available at the low price of $5 per month, $50 per year or $125 for a lifetime pass ahead of a price increase that is coming in late April.
