Verizon slows churn in Fios TV business

Verizon saw a continued trend of customers dropping its traditional pay television service in favor of alternatives during the first three months of the year, but churn attributed to its Fios TV service was lower than the comparable quarter in 2024.

On Tuesday, the company released its financial data for the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, during which Verizon lost 58,000 residential Fios TV customers. Verizon ended the month of March with 2.63 million Fios TV subscribers, down nearly 9 percent compared to Q1 2024.

While the loss isn’t particularly great for Verizon and its Fios TV business, its quarterly churn actually improved compared when compared to the 68,000 Fios TV customers Verizon lost during the first three months of 2024.

Like some other pay TV companies, Verizon has allowed its Fios TV broadband subscribers to pay for traditional pay TV packages through Fios TV, though it has increasingly marketed alternative services like YouTube TV, which offer many of the same channels at lower monthly rates.

Verizon’s broadband business has increasingly shifted toward its Fios land-based service and fixed-wireless products that leverage its 4G LTE and 5G networks to deliver high-speed connectivity to homes and businesses.

Fios broadband customers increased to 7.3 million during Q1 2025, up nearly 1.5 percent compared to Q1 2024, while its fixed wireless product saw 41 percent growth to end the quarter with nearly 3 million customers, Verizon said.

On the wireless side, the company recently introduced a new three-year price-lock guarantee that promises cost stability across its consumer plans, as well as perks like easier access to free phones and unique subscription bundles through its Plus-Play platform.

Wireless customers were relatively flat, with Verizon counting 115.1 million postpaid and prepaid subscribers across its different products, including prepaid services like Visible, Straight Talk Wireless, Walmart Family Mobile and Tracfone. The subscriber count includes customers who pay for access to Verizon’s network on their phone, tablets and hotspot devices.
