Technology developer Nuvyyo has introduced an offline mode for its fourth-generation Tablo digital video recorders, the company announced on Friday.
The feature is making its way to the Tablo app for Android TV and Amazon Fire TV devices first, and will be available for other connected television platforms in the near future, a company spokesperson said in an email to The Desk.
Offline mode allows users of the fourth-generation Tablo DVR to watch recorded content and live broadcast channels, even when their Internet connection may not be working or in the event of a server outage on Nuvvyo’s end.
The feature was promised last September after a server outage left football fans unable to watch live broadcast channels during the first week of the National Football League’s (NFL) season. Legacy-model Tablos, which lack access to dozens of free streaming channels, have long worked without an active Internet connection or the need to ping Nuvyyo’s servers.
There are still a few limitations with offline mode on newer Tablo DVRs: Users can’t trigger it manually, and it won’t kick in after a power outage. Nuvyyo said the latter limitation is because the Tablo DVR needs to fetch the current time from an online server when it reboots, and it can’t get the current time if the Internet is not working.
Nuvyyo is owned by the E. W. Scripps Company.
