Nexstar Media Group is recognizing the 30th year of its charitable foundation by launching a new campaign that will see the broadcaster donate $5,000 to a non-profit during the month of June, the company announced on Monday.
Dubbed the “30 Days of Giving,” the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation will issue financial grants to organizations located in 30 communities that are served by the company’s local broadcast television stations. The campaign coincides with the company’s annual Day of giving, which involves employee-driven volunteer initiatives in Nexstar broadcast markets.
“A critical part of Nexstar’s legacy is giving back to the communities we serve, not just by delivering outstanding journalism and unbiased fact-based local news, but through volunteer work, community engagement, and financial support,” Perry Sook, Nexstar’s founder and CEO, said in a statement. “Nexstar launched Founder’s Day in 2016 to commemorate our 20th anniversary, and every year we mark the occasion with paid time off for our employees to volunteer at local charities and nonprofit organizations. The launch of 30 Days of Giving will expand our impact as we mark our 30th anniversary, uniting the company around a meaningful initiative that deepens our support of the communities in which we are located.”
Employees who participate in the company’s Founder’s Day committee will help select eligible non-profits to receive the grants, Nexstar said on Monday.
The initiative only involves Nexstar’s owned or operated television stations; it doesn’t include outlets that the company is attempting to integrate from its subsidiary business TEGNA, which it acquired last month but is currently at the center of a lawsuit filed by several state attorneys general and DIRECTV challenging the deal against federal antitrust laws.
Earlier this month, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction that largely prevents Nexstar from moving forward with its integration of TEGNA while the lawsuit plays out in court, Last week, Nexstar filed a notice with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirming its intention to appeal the injunction.
