The E. W. Scripps Company has tapped veteran news executive Sean McGarvy to serve as the company’s new Head of News, starting next week.
In his new role, McGarvy will oversee news standards and help align Scripps’ local newsrooms, digital operations and streaming channel Scripps News under a unified strategy focused on news consumers. He will report to Dean Littleton, who was promoted to President of Media in July.
McGarvy will lead efforts to extend the reach of the company’s journalism across broadcast, streaming and digital platforms while strengthening connections between its reporting and local communities.
“Scripps’ transformation is about evolving our organization to serve audiences and communities in new ways,” Littleton said in a statement. “Our journalism is central to that work, and Sean brings the news judgment, operational discipline and audience focus needed to help align our local newsrooms, digital operations and Scripps News around the needs of American news consumers.”
McGarvy most recently served as the Senior Director of Digital News Operations at Scripps, where he led strategy and audience growth across Scripps News Group’s digital platforms, including its channels and profiles on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. The company said he helped expand the reach of its journalism through audience-driven news strategies and a coordinated approach to digital publishing and streaming news.
He previously served as the Senior Director of Local News Strategy, working with Scripps’ local television markets to deepen community connections and improve collaboration across Scripps News Group.
Earlier in his Scripps career, McGarvy was News Director at WEWS-TV (Channel 5, ABC) in Cleveland and Assistant News Director at KMGH-TV (Channel 7, ABC) in Denver. His career spans nearly 30 years in newsrooms across the country, including Managing Editor and Assignment Manager roles at local television stations and Fox News Channel.
