OpenAI says its popular conversational chatbot ChatGPT will begin rendering image-based advertising in the United States later this month.

The image ads will appear while users are creating pictures through ChatGPT but will remain separate from the generated images themselves, the technology company said. Advertising will contain a prominent label; a small group of ad buyers have already committed to the test run.

Advertisers will be able to provide sales data through Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp. OpenAI is also working with attribution providers including AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, Tenjin, Northbeam, Triple Whale and DV Rockerbox to measure sales and sign-ups across websites and apps.

OpenAI is separately working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand-safety pilots. The company said neither measurement provider will have access to users’ private ChatGPT conversations. Some advertisers will also gain access to “negative phrases,” allowing them to identify topics alongside which they do not want their advertisements to appear.

OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches more than 1.2 billion people each week. Its advertising business surpassed $1 billion earlier this year.
